1. Interview

Student: Could you tell us about your musical instrument?

I have never seen it.

Mark: Sure! This is a didgeridoo.

It’s a traditional Australian instrument.

Aborigines, the native people of Australia, have played the didgeridoo at their ceremonies for more than 1,000 years.

Student: It’s a very old instrument!

You have some didgeridoos in front of you.

Each of them is different in length

Do you make them by hand?

Mark: Yes, we do. We go to the forest, and look for eucalyptus trees.

Some of them have holes in them because the ants eat the inside.

We cut down the tree, shape it into a didgeridoo and paint it.

Student: The paintings are beautiful!  Are they all different?

Mark: That’s right. The paintings are very simple.

Many of them use only four colors – red, yellow, black and white, but they can express so many things.

We make the colors from natural products, such as rack and coal.

Student: I see. Then, would you play a note on it?

Mark: No problem!

Student: Oh, it has a unique sound. How do you play it?

Mark: We use both our mouth and nose when we breath.

In that way, you can make the sound for a long time

Student: That sounds difficult!

Mark: Playing the didgeridoo takes practice

Student: Thank you for your time!

Mark: You’re welcome. By the way, will you come to the museum tomorrow?

I will hold a concert there.

Student: Oh, will you ? We will be there!
